WILSON, Woodrow - Division and Reunion 1829-1889

Title: Division and Reunion 1829-1889
Description: New York, Longmans, Green, and Co, 1897. Hardcover. 16mo. Blue cloth with gilt and ivory lettering. xix, 326pp, (6pp ads). Color foldout frontispiece map, 4 additional small color foldout maps. Very good. Mild binding wear only, with bit of age toning and foxing to preliminary leaves. Tight and nice later printing of this 1893 text, the third and final volume in series editor Albert Bushnell Hart's "Epochs of American History" series. This was the third book by the Princeton University professor and future 29th president of the United States and it became a popular text for teaching American history for the latter half of the 19th century. This special copy bears tipped to the front flyleaf a 4" X 5" presentation slip inscribed large and bold in blue ink "To my friend Adlai Stevenson/ May the words herein help / you to continue your / Journey on the Path / of Peace. Profound / Sincerely and warmly / Henry E.G. Luytius / Hartford Conn. 1964." The identity of Luytius (1888-1975) remains unclear, as does his relationship to Stevenson -- but then-U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Stevenson did occasionally receive books from unknown admirers and this may be one of them. His admiration for President Wilson was well known, making this a particularly apropos gift. Luytius' Hartford name/address label appears on the rear pastedown. From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), son of the governor and himself U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81). .
