AMBROSE, D. Leib - Under the Gas-Light: Or Lights and Shadows in the State Capital of Illinois

Title: Under the Gas-Light: Or Lights and Shadows in the State Capital of Illinois
Description: Springfield, T.W.S. Kidd, Publisher, 1879. Hardcover. 12mo. Terra cotta cloth over bevelled boards with front board decorative black rules and black/copper lettering. 144pp. Very good. Binding a tad age toned, else quite nice, with text block tight and bright; December 25, 1879 ownership signature on inner flyleaf. Handsome first edition of this "series of rambles in the State Capital of Illinois, which have appeared in the Monday morning issue of the Daily Sangamo Monitor during the past year" -- 31 leisurely essays around town that do indeed ramble in subject matter, penned by the Illinois journalist and city editor of the "Sangamo Monitor," also author of a regimental history of the Seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry. This special copy bears an intriguing nonauthorial presentation inscription boldly penned on front flyleaf 74 years to the day after the book's original ownership date: "December 25,1953 / Holiday good wishes to / Adlai E. Stevenson, / who has been a leading light / of Springfield; / and who now is among the / First Citizens of the World. / With the respect and admiration of / Robert Downing." Robert Downing (1914-75), to cite the Harry Ransom Center at University of Texas where his papers are held, "was a noted production stage manager, actor, director, playwright, and theatre critic who worked with some of the great playwrights and directors of the twentieth century, including Tennessee Williams, Elia Kazan, Ezra Stone, and Moss Hart." Downing's personal connection to Stevenson is a mystery, although the Ransom papers do include correspondence between the two. What is clear is Downing's excitement at Stevenson's rising status as, having been resoundingly defeated in 1952 by Eisenhower, he took a heavily-publicized world tour that included meeting many heads of state and writing a series of articles for "Look" magazine -- hence Dowing's "First Citizens of the World" comment. From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), son of the governor and himself U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81). .
