HURN, Ethel Alice - Wisconsin Women in the War between the States

Title: Wisconsin Women in the War between the States
Description: Madison, Wisconsin History Commission, 1911. Hardcover. Small 4to. Vellum spine with gilt lettering and brown paper over boards. ix, 190pp. Frontispiece, 6 illustrations (1 foldout). Very good. A bit edgeworn, with spine typically darkened and remnant of paper spine label; printing issues causes ghostly overprinting to several leaves near center. First edition of the sixth in this commission's "Original Papers" series, one of 5,000 copies printed. Popular Wisconsin writer Fred L. Holmes (1883-1946), author of classics "Alluring Wisconsin," "Badger Saints and Sinners" and "Old World Wisconsin," gave this copy to the St. Thomas Aquinas Library at Saint Clara College in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin, as noted on their tasteful small bookplate on front pastedown; their small inkstamped name also appears on title page. John T. Hubbell describes this as "A recounting of the activities of women on the home front in sending supplies, supporting morale, tending farms, etc. while the men were away." NEVINS II, 129. .
