WARD, Barbara - Policy for the West

Title: Policy for the West
Description: New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 1951. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering. viii, 317pp. Very good. Faintest of binding wear, thought internally tight and fine; lacks dust jacket; miniscule inkstamp of Wisconsin convent on front flyleaf and bottom of title page. Attractive first edition of this study of U.S. policy in the face of aggression by the noted British economist (Baroness Jackson of Lodsworth, 1914-81) known as a strong advocate for developing countries who also urged Western countries to share their prosperity -- sentiments whose broad humanitarian concerns were shared by former First Lady and renowned diplomat and activist Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), whose personal copy this was. Roosevelt's large ornate bookplate appears on the front pastedown, while upper left of pastedown bears a small circular "Estate of / Eleanor / Roosevelt / Hyde Park, N.Y." sticker and upper right the "Eleanor Roosevelt" 1963 5-cent USPS stamp. Affixed to rear endpaper is a 5½" X 5" penned note presenting this book, n.p. n.y. [likely 1964]. Addressed to Sister Vincent Ferrer (1931-2020, noted Roman Catholic educator and theologian, president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana 1984-98). "It has now been six years since I last took your course in world politics," writes a former pupil, "but I hope I can presume to send you this from Eleanor Roosevelt's collection, which was sold this fall. It was so exciting to see and be able to buy the books and even more comforting to find that hundreds of other people felt the same way. .
