Author: FIELD, Rachel Title: Calico Bush
Description: New York, The Macmillan Company, 1931. Hardcover. Wood engravings by Allen Lewis. 8vo. Green and ivory patterned cloth with front board paper label. xi, 213pp. Frontispiece engraving, 3 full-page engravings and many small engravings. Very good. Text block tight and internally near fine, with just faintest edgewear to binding. Handome first edition of what is probably Field's best-known work, a historical novel set in Maine like much of her work -- winner of the coveted Newbery Honor award. On the front flyleaf, she boldly inscribes and signs it in black ink in year of publication "For / Wanda Anne Tyler / with best wishes from / Rachel Field / 1931" -- and beneath adds a lovely small ink sketch of a sailboat cruising along a shoreline. For having published so prolifically in a life too short at 47 years (1894-1942), more than two dozen titles over two decades (including a Newbery Medal winner in 1929 and a posthumous Caldecott Medal in 1944), this versatile novelist, poet and children's book writer seems to have signed relatively few titles -- and we have not seen. The wood engravings by Allen Lewis (1873-1957) are as usual superlative and powerful. .
