Author: ZABEL, Morton Dauwen (1901-64) Title: Typed Letter Signed
Description: When founder and long-time editor of the pioneering magazine "Poetry" died in 1936, her associate editor since 1928 stepped in for a couple years before moving on to a prolific career as literary critic and essayist, authoring and editing books about literary figures, and an academic career at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1944-46) -- their first North American Literature professor -- and at the University of Chicago (1947-64). TLS, 1p, 5½" X 8½", Chicago, IL, 29 December 1934. Addressed to music educator John G. Leiser. Very good. Two original horizontal folds. On pale blue "Poetry: A Magazine of Verse" letterhead citing him as Associate Editor, the neophyte editor chats about his first book appearance. In part: "Miss Monroe and I compiled 'Poems for Every Mood' at the request of the Whitman Company, and we did it in the hope that good modern poems, as well as some classic ones, would reach a wide audience of readers at an almost negligible price.. I am delighted to hear that you find the anthology so satisfying and that you are using it with success in your school." Boldly signed in full at the close. With original envelope. Great content with interesting remarks regarding Zabel's new boss and their joint effort, which also summarizes Monroe's goal when she founded "Poetry" in 1912 -- and it still thrives today. Unusual and fascinating. .
