Author: Title: The Manly Anniversary Studies in Language and Literature
Description: Chicago, The University of Chicago Press, 1923. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and decoration. x, 432pp. Frontispiece. Very good. Mildest of binding wear, with spine rather age toned; internally tight and fine. Sharp first edition of this collection of miscellaneous literary essays published to honor the 25th anniversary as head of the English Department of John Matthews Manly (1865-1940), professor of English literature and long-time chair of that department. Contributors of these 41 wide-ranging essays on English literary history represent a "Who's Who" of literary scholars and include GEORGE W. SHERBURN (1884-1962), a leading expert in 18th century English literature and renowned Alexander Pope authority as well as long-time Harvard University professor and head of their English Department (although at University of Chicago when this book was released); his essay "Notes on the Canon of Pope's Works, 1714-20) appears on pp. 170-179. Tipped to the front flyleaf of this copy is an Autograph Note Signed from Sherburn, 1p, 8¼" X 5½", Chicago, IL, 5 February 1935. On letterhead of "The University of Chicago / Department of English," he writes in black ink: "Mr. Gibson has checked these Coleridge items and it seems obvious that they ought to be in the Rare Book Room," boldly signed. Another hand (presumably from the Rare Book Room) adds, "The books have been transferred to Rare book room." Very good. Minor folds. One wonders what the Samuel Taylor Coleridge "items" mentioned were.. Intriguing copy. .
