TUSSER, Thomas - Thomas Tusser: 1557 Floruit -- His Good Points of Husbandry

Title: Thomas Tusser: 1557 Floruit -- His Good Points of Husbandry
Description: London, Country Life Limited, 1931. Hardcover. Edited by Dorothy Hartley. Small 4to. Quarter tan cloth with black/red spine lettering and faux wood paper over boards with black/red lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 195pp. Color frontispiece, 22pp facsimile, numerous illustrations. Very good/very good. Mild binding wear, with head and foot of spine age toned; heavy stock jacket a bit age toned (spine more so) and with chips at extremities and at spine head/tail, but overall still attractive. Tight and nice first edition of this gathering of writings by and about the once-popular English poet and farmer (1524-80) whose long rustic poem "A Hundreth Good Pointes of Husbandrie" (1557) became an Elizabethan classic, which he followed in 1573 with the far larger "Five Hundreth Pointes of Good Husbandrie." This volume not only offers up in facsimile the British Museum's rare first edition, but includes the text of the enlarged sequel, an autobiography in verse that he wrote and other works, plus useful comments on the editions by editor Hartley. Jacket front panel title: “Thomas Tusser: His Farming in East Anglia.” Front flyleaf bears the ownership signature of Ernest Horn (1882-1967), noted University of Iowa professor education and author of a number of popular spellers and other books. .
