KIRKLAND, Thomas J., and KENNEDY, Robert M. - Historic Camden: Part One -- Colonial and Revolutionary

Title: Historic Camden: Part One -- Colonial and Revolutionary
Description: Camden, SC, Kershaw County Historical Society, 1963. Hardcover. 8vo. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. 423pp, (1p). Illustrations, maps (2 foldout). Very good. Tight and nice, with the most minor of binding wear only; endpapers a bit age toned. Handsome facsimile reprint of the 1905 first edition. (A Part Two covering the 19th century was also published in 1926.) This intriguing copy bears a fine full-page presentation inscription in blue ballpoint from father-and-son movers-and-shakers of Camden, South Carolina, county seat of Kershaw County: "Presented to Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III with appreciation for his service to state and nation and for his help in the restoration of Hope by Sam. P. Manning and Andrew Adger Manning. Note: From page 321 to 326 is an article about the patriot and statesman, your kinsman, Judge Joseph Brevard of North Carolina and Camden, South Carolina." Sam P. Manning (1926-99), who wrote this inscription, was a noted South Carolina attorney and state legislator, while his father (1880-1962) was a well-known South Carolina attorney and civic leader. Stevenson (1930-2021) served as U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-83) and was son of the Illinois governor and two-time Democratic presidential candidate -- and descended from the American Revolutionary soldier (1766-1821) who went on to serve as South Carolina Supreme Court justice and U.S. Congressman. "Hope" refers to Hope Plantation, the Windsor, North Carolina plantation of early NC governor and U.S. senator David Stone. A "Historic Hope Foundation" was created in the 1960s to restore this home to its former glory, and Stevenson lent his support to this effort -- laid in is a fine heavy stock 5½" X 7½" cord-tied formal program for a dinner honoring Stevenson held April 13, 1971. Among the list of "Friends of Hope" cited are Sam P. Manning and "Mrs. Andrew Manning" (he having died shortly after signing this book, which appeared in 1962 despite publication date of 1963).
