SORENSEN, Theodore C. - The Kennedy Legacy

Title: The Kennedy Legacy
Description: New York, The Macmillan Company, 1969. Hardcover. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering, dust jacket. 414pp. Near fine/very good. Jacket a tad edgeworn and a trifle scuffed, with spine faintly sunned. Tight and nice first edition of JFK's closest advisor's attempt to revitalize the Kennedy heritage in the aftermath of Robert Kennedy's assassination – “A Peaceful Revolution for the Seventies,” as jacket front panel proclaims. This intriguing copy from the collection of Illinois Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), son of the Illinois governor and two-time Democratic presidential candidate (1900-65) -- with his five Post-It notes bearing his inked jottings still in place. Governor Stevenson had been considered by JFK for Secretary of State, but was instead named U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. On one of Senator Stevenson's notes he transcribes Sorenson's page 77 sentence that resonated: "The alternative to a bunch of yes men is not a bunch of no men," and the Post-It remains on that page. On page 85 the Senator's note refers to "last sentence par[agraph] 2 Sorensen's comments on AES II at UN" -- a long complimentary paragraph regarding Adlai II as ambassador. The rest are interesting if sometimes cryptic. An unusual copy with original additions from the noted son of a JFK appointee who makes a number of appearances in the book. .
