Author: WILSON, Woodrow Title: Woodrow Wilson: Selections for Today
Description: New York, Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1945. Hardcover. Edited by Arthur Bernon Tourtellot. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt lettering. x, 258pp. Very good. Faint binding wear, with corners gently bumped; text block lightly age toned per usual. Later printing, tight and nice, with the expected "Wartime Book" logo, of this selection of the 28th president's writings and speeches. A perfectly routine copy, but with a choice twist: This copy hails from the library of one of his great admirers and students -- Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and two-time Democratic presidential candidate. He did not mark it in any way (he rarely wrote in his books), but one can imagine the future statesman in 1945 -- when he served on the committee creating the United Nations, of whom he also served on the initial delegation -- perusing these pages and absorbing Wilson's thoughts on the League of Nations he'd proposed as one of his "Fourteen Points" in 1918. This copy later became part of the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois. The Senator inherited his father's respect for Wilson -- laid in is a folded leaf of his imprinted 6" X 9" Chicago letterhead that he'd clearly used as a page marker. He inks a few random words on it and there are a few pen-starting ink squiggles. An all-around delightful copy with intriguing associations. .
