(COLONIAL WARRANT). BREESE, Samuel (1737-1800) - Autograph Document Signed

Title: Autograph Document Signed
Description: This jurist served as a colonel with the 3rd Regiment of Monmouth County, New Jersey militia during the American Revolution before becoming a judge. ADS, 1p, 7½" X 10," Somerset County, NJ, 2 March 1788. Lightly age toned and showing minor wear along the edges, with bit of loss at folds -- but overall quite handleable and legible. Strange court proceeding in which Judge Breese issues this warrant to Danial Hendrickson, High Sheriff of the County of Monmouth, to collect "Two hundred & fifty Six pound, Sixteen shillings & 11p & Three shillings & 3p costs current money of the state of New Jersey" from Jeremiah Bonham Junior, Constable of the County of Monmouth. One wonders what circumstances led to a county sheriff being ordered to collect a large sum of money from a county constable, but Breese's boilerplate opening referencing "an act to ascertain the time and mode of levying taxes, & the better to enforce the collection thereof" suggests the nature of the problem. Constable Bonham is likely Jeremiah Dunn Bonham, 1743-1825. Is this the same Daniel Hendrickson (1722 -- 24 June 1788) whose portrait resides in the Monmouth County Historical Association? If so, this warrant was issued just months before his death at age 65. Handsomely penned in brown ink, bearing a small wax-affixed paper seal at the close. Extensive notes and annotations, some signed by Hendrickson, on the verso. Intriguing. .
