BERESFORD, Charles, 1st Baron Beresford (1846-1919) - Autograph Letter Signed

Title: Autograph Letter Signed
Description: Known as "Lord Beresford," this flamboyant British admiral is remembered for his part in the bombardment of Alexandria in the Egyptian War of 1882 and the Nile expedition (1884-85); he also served as a Member of Parliament with the Conservative party (1874-80, 1885-89). ALS, 4pp (lettersheet), heavy stock 4½" X 7", n.p. 6 May 1887. Addressed to Mr. Collette. Very good. Mildly age toned (more so on last page). With small oval blind-embossed "Admiralty, S.W." device at top, Lord Beresford the second-time M.P. pens in his huge bold hand the opposite of a letter of introduction. In part: "A Member of Parliament asked me to give a certain Major Jameson a letter of Introduction to you. This I refused to do, as I believe he has something to do with Whisky and probably wants to tender to the Govt. at least that I made out. I told him I could do nothing to help him in any way out of the ordinary official routine, but I have no doubt that you would see him if he called. It may be; he might say I sent him so I write to tell you the lack of this case, to prevent any misunderstanding.." Signed large and bold at the close. The identity of "Mr. Collette" and of "Major Jameson" are unknown; there was an Irish M.P. named Major Jameson later in the 19th century, but whether this is one and the same we do not know. Intriguing, in any case. .
