Author: TOLSTOI, Leo Title: The Two Pilgrims / If You Neglect the Fire You Don't Put It out
Description: London, Walter Scott, Ltd, n.y. Hardcover. Illustrations by H.R. Millar. 16mo. Green cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial giltstamping. 121pp, (8pp ads). Two frontispieces, All edges gilt. Very good. Mildest of binding wear only; tiny convent archives inkstamp on inner flyleaf and title page. Handsome undated (likely 1895) edition of this cute, large-margined version of these two short stories whose translator is not credited, with leaf preceding frontispiece showing this title as third in a series. Interestingly, inner flyleaf bears ownership signature in purple ink of "Sister M. Imelda Teresa Swift, O.P." Born Susie Forrest Swift in 1862, this Vassar College graduate became a devout Salvation Army convert and editor of their international organ "All the World" in London and New York, to which she contributed much literary work and became the first female S.A. officer to attain the rank of major; in 1896 she converted to Roman Catholicism and became a Dominican novitiate, directing a Dominican college in Havana, Cuba and master of novices in New York, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin, where she died in 1916 at age 54. Another gift inscription on same page is dated 31 January 1895, which predates Swift's conversion to Catholicism. Quite an intriguing copy. .
