Author: HEATH, Edward (1916-2005) Title: Typed Letter Signed
Description: The long-time British member of Parliament served as prime minister from 1960 to 1974 and led the Conservative Party from 1965 to 1975. TLS, 1p, 7½" X 9½, London, England, 7 June 1963. Addressed to Madame Pierre Monteux. On blue embossed letterhead of the "Foreign Office" with the Lord Privy Seal (to which he was appointed in 1963) above, Heath comments on the Charlemagne Prize, an award given for work toward European unification, which he was awarded in 1963. "It was most kind of you to write as you did about the Charlemagne Prize. The ceremony was a most moving one and I shall never forget it." Recipient Madame Monteux was wife of the famed French conductor (1875-1964), so it's no surprise Heath would turn the subject to music -- in 1961 Pierre Monteux was named principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra: "I was delighted to hear of the Orchestra's wonderful reception in Vienna and I only wish I could have been there. I thought the performance at the Albert Hall last week was magnificent." Heath pens the opening salutation ("Dear Mme Monteux") and at the close "Yours sincerely, signing large and bold. With original envelope. .
