Description: This notable Philadelphia attorney served as Secretary of the Treasury under Zachary Taylor (1849-50). ALS, 1p, 8" X 10", Philadelphia, PA, 13 May 1839. Addressed to "My dear Uncle" (Jonathan Meredith, 1784-1872, famed Baltimore attorney). Good plus. Irregularly age toned, with small chips at left margin and old archival mends on verso. The young Meredith served as president of the Philadelphia City Council from 1834 to 1849, and here conducts some business with his uncle. In part: "I enclose Certificate of Deposit by me this day to your Credit in the Bank of the United States, of Four thousand and two hundred 21/100 Dollars. -- I received the money & delivered the papers which accompanied your letter.. on Saturday afternoon after banking hours." This being family, he of course adds "Love to all" and signs in full after "In haste / Always faithfully / Yrs." Boldly penned in brown ink. .
