Author: HOFFMAN, John T. (1828-88) Title: Autograph Letter Signed
Description: One of only two mayors of New York City (78th, 1866-68) to be elected that state's governor (23rd, 1869-72), this politician's association with corrupt William Tweed and Tammany Hall ruined his political career. ALS, 3pp (lettersheet), 5" X 8", New York, NY, 23 June 1866. Addressed to Richard Lathers (1821-1903, prominent Charleston and later New York commission merchant, banker, diplomat, insurance and railroad executive). Very good. Original folds; weakened centerfold neatly and discreetly archivally strengthened. Cordial note to a friend, penned during his brief stint as mayor on letterhead bearing his imprinted JTH initials in blue (below which he pens "Mayors office"). Begs off an invitation: "I am indebted to you & to Mrs L. for your very kind [invitation] to myself & Mrs H. to visit Winyah Park on Thursday next. I regret to say that I have made an engagement to visit my old School The Mt Pleasant Academy and review and address the Cadets there, it being "Commencement Day".. Boldly signed in full and penned in Hoffman's large script in brown ink. Winyah Park (later name "Lathers Park") was Lathers well-known 300-acre estate near New Rochelle. .
