Title: Color Inscribed Photograph Signed / Inscription and Signature
Description: The third of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg's seven children -- he had at least five illegitimate children as well -- was Infanta Beatriz; the family ended up spending much of their lives in exile in Paris and Rome, where in 1935 she married Alessandro Torlonia, 5th Prince of Civitella-Cesi (1911-86). Their fourth child (and second daughter) was Infanta Maria Cristina (or if you prefer María Cristina Teresa Alejandra María de Guadalupe María de la Concepción Ildefonsa Victoria Eugenia de Borbón y Battenberg), who in 1940 wed Conte Enrico Eugenio Marone-Cinzano (1895-1968). Two items: INFANTA BEATRIZ -- Color IPS (verso), glossy 4" X 6", Rome, Italy, n.y. [likely 1950s]. Near fine. Image side somewhat yellowed slightly crazed, verso lightly age toned. Recto is captioned "Palazzo Torlonia in Roma / "Il Cortile" and depicts the courtyard of Alessandro's 16th century Renaissance mansion in Rome. On the blank verso Beatriz pens a message in blue ink: "Best wishes dear Beth for a / merry Xmas & very happy New / Year, affectionately / Beatriz & Allesandro." Second item: INFANTA MARIA CRISTINA -- Inscription and signature on buff heavy stock 4 3/4" X 7" card, n.p. 1956. Near fine. Printed message at center reads "Bringing Christmas Greetings / and all good Wishes for / the Coming Year," below which Infanta Maria Cristina writes in bold blue ink: "1956 / & all the best / of luck in everything / dear Beth from / Maria Cristina & / Enrico" -- "Enrico" penned in same ink by her husband, Conte Enrico Eugenio Marone-Cinzano. Recipient of these cards, "Beth," was likely the name of a nursemaid who assisted Prince Andrew's childhood nanny, Mabel Anderson. An unusual pair. .
