Author: DONEGALL, Marquess of (Edward Arthur Donald St. George Hamilton Chichester) (1903-75) Title: Autograph Note Signed
Description: This popular British journalist was a member of the British peerage -- but was often heard to say "Call me Don!" ANS, 10, heavy stock 9¼" X 6½", London, U.K. n.y. [1953]. Near fine. Elegantly printed "Every good wish for Christmas / and the New Year from" at center and at lower left Donegall's London address. After "from" he writes in black ink "Don," adding below: "Thank you again, dear Beth, for / all your kindness and hospitality / throughout 1953. The older one gets the / more one appreciates real friends. / Don." Recipient "Beth" was likely the name of a nursemaid who assisted Prince Andrew's childhood nanny, Mabel Anderson. Interestingly, 1953 was the year that Donegall divorced his first wife Gladys Jean after ten years of non-bliss, leading one to conclude from his heartfelt message that Beth consoled him during a difficult year. Quite intriguing. .
