Description: This career U.S. Army officer served with distinction in the American Indian Wars, Spanish–American War, Philippine–American War, Pancho Villa Expedition and World War I, rising through the ranks to major general. ALS, 1p (lettersheet), 6" X 7", Washington, DC, 13 October 1931. Addressed to Ashley J. Cole. Near fine. On imprinted letterhead, Bundy replies cordially to a correspondent who wrote because of Bundy's having commanded the Second Division for a time in World War One -- during which time he got in refused an order to retreat from his French superior in the face of advancing German troops. Even though Bundy launched a successful counterattack, he was soon moved elsewhere. "In reply to your inquire relative to a history of the Second Division," he writes, "I beg to inform you that so far as I know no such history has yet been published. I would suggest that you write to Capt. C.O. Mattfeldt, Army War College, Washington. He has for some years been engaged in compiling a history of the Division."
