Author: PLUMBE, John, Jr. Title: Sketches of Iowa and Wisconsin
Description: Iowa City, The State Historical Society of Iowa, 1948. Hardcover. 8vo. Full brown leatherette with gilt lettering and decoration, dust jacket. xvii, (8pp), 103pp, advertisement. Frontispiece, large foldout map at rear. Fine/very good. Some jacket edge chips; small inkstamped Wisconsin convent name at bottom of title page. Handsome facsimile reprint of the incredibly rare 1839 first edition (St. Louis: Chambers, Harris & Knapp). William E. Petersen introduces this text that fails to sketch out Wisconsin and covers Iowa only. Welsh-American Plumbe (1809-57), ever the entrepreneur, went on to become a noted photographer and publisher. Accompanying this is a 1984 pamphlet, "Photographers of Galena, Illinois" by Stephen Repp: 8vo, stiff tan wrappers, ca. 40pp, illustrations. Near fine. Interesting in that in the 1840s Plumbe established and franchised quite a few daguerreotype studios and galleries in many states, yet he appears nowhere in this study! HOWES P 426 note. .
