A superb, tight first edition of this well-illustrated history and guide to sites. Interestingly, tipped to front flyleaf is a 4½" X 6½" illustrations showing Lincoln as president with a Native American, caption below reading "Interceding for an Indian in the Black-Hawk War" -- this as pencilled note on verso states from W.M. Thayer's "From Pioneer Home to White House" (New York, 1885). Small inkstamp of Dominican convent in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin, on rear pastedown -- the tiny southwest spot where some Black Hawk War skirmishes took place. .
