NICHOLS, Phebe Jewell (Mrs. Angus F. Lookaround) - Oshkosh the Brave: Chief of the Wisconsin Menominees, and His Family

Title: Oshkosh the Brave: Chief of the Wisconsin Menominees, and His Family
Description: N.p. Menominee Indian Reservation, 1954. Hardcover. 16mo. Burgundy buckram with gilt lettering, dust jacket. 145pp. Illustrations, map endpapers. Fine/very good. Faint jacket wear only, with small chip at head of spine; else tight and superb; tiny Wisconsin convent name inkstamped near bottom of title page. Handsome "Centennial Edition 1854-1954" of this diminutive biography of Chief Oshkosh (1795-1858), head of the Menominee tribe of Wisconsin -- and 1854 the year in which the U.S. government made a treaty officially granting the Menominees their land. Nichols (1885-1964) was a teacher and writer who married noted Menominee athlete and musician Angus F. Lookaround (1893-1946) in 1934; the tiny city of Keshena, county seat of Menominee County and located on the Menominee Indian Reservation, established the Angus F. Lookaround Memorial Museum and Studio in 1948, and this book bears the large inkstamped name of this museum on an inner flyleaf. Shortly before her death in 1964 the author boldly inscribes and signs in black ink the blank leaf facing the title page: "To / the Dominican Sisters / of Father Mazzuchelli; / With the best wishes / of the author, / Phebe Jewell Nichols / (Mrs. Angus F. Lookaround) / August 11, 1964. / Keshena / Menominee County, / Wisconsin." Quite an unusual copy of this scarce title. .
