A few occasional circled words and checkmarks, else text block tight and superb. Handsome facsimile reprint of the scarce 1878 county history (Chicago: H.F. Kett & Co.) of the northwest Illinois region famed for Galena and its many Union generals (including U.S. Grant) -- and itself uncommon, especially in sharp condition. This special copy bears tipped to front flyleaf a delightful Galena document: Partly-printed document, 8½" X 4 3/4", Galena, IL 6 April 1899. Near fine. Sales receipt, printed entirely in brown ink, from the Geo. C. Biesmann & Son firm on Galena's Main Street, "Manufacturers of Fine Cigars" and with an image of two bees. Handwritten portion notes sale to the Galena Commandery No. 40 for "50 Lead Mine" cigars for $1.75." "Lead Mine Cigar Company" was a well-known local firm and Galena Commandery No. 40 a local Knights Templar organization. Local notable Benjamin F. Fowler, M.D. boldly dockets in pencil near the bottom "Correct / B.F. Fowler / For Trustees." Noted doctor Fowler (born 1825) is profiled in this book on page 633 and his full-page portrait with facsimile signature beneath on page 479. George C. Biesmann is noted on page 625. FILBY 79. .
