Title: The Catholic Church in Wisconsin. A History of the Catholic Church in Wisconsin from the Earliest Time to the Present Day
Description: Milwaukee, Catholic Historical Publishing Company, 1898. Hardcover. 4to. Green cloth with gilt lettering/rules and elaborate front board black and gilt pictorial stamping. xiv, 1181pp. Frontispiece, numerous illustrations, tan floral endpapers. Good plus. Binding is rather edgeworn, mostly at spine head and tail; hinges a tad rough but holding, reinforced internally with green cloth book tape; small inkstamp of Wisconsin convent on front and inner flyleaves; while preliminary leaves show some edgewear, the large text block is uniformly tight and nice. A decent and quite handleable first edition of this hefty and extremely thorough two-column chronicle, apparently the only publication of historian Heming (1852-1933). Sub-subtitle further elaborates: "Including an account of the founding and development of the Catholic Church in Wisconsin -- History of the labors of missionaries and early priests -- building of the first churches -- organization of parishes, dioceses and archdiocese -- statement of present condition of the church" -- and further elaborates that it's "Illustrated by Portraits of Archbishop, Bishops, Priests, Prominent Laymen and Pictures of Churches, Educational and Other Religious Institutions." This 7 pound 9.3 ounce behemoth is seldom found in such acceptable, reasonable condition. .
