Author: STEVENS, Thomas Wood Title: Book of Words: A Pageant of the Italian Renaissance
Description: Chicago, The Antiquarian Society of the Art Institute, 1909. Hardcover. Small 4to. Full terra cotta calf with raised bands. 85pp. Woodblock engravings. Very good. Quite minor edgewear only, endpapers a bit age toned, else tight and internally near fine; many leaves show faint pinholes near outer edge (where stage instructions may have been pinned?). First edition. This Chicago author, poet, artist, theatre director, publisher, calligrapher, and jack-of-all-book trades (1880-1942) wrote and produced this, his first pageant, and others during the teens when this genre was briefly popular. Faux-Renaissance title page printed partly in red, with decorative border. This pageant was, according to the title page, "Produced at the Art Institute Chicago, January 26 and 27, 1909," and its cast of characters is a "Who's Who" of Italian Renaissance notables: Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Savonarola, Michael Angelo, Rafael, Cellini, Vasari, Titian, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Dante, Tintoretto, Fra Angelico, dozens of others. This copy likely belonged to someone involved in the production, for pencilled into the margins here and there are stage directions such as "Start music," "Curtain," "German march." Pencilled note on rear pastedown records: "Sewed & Bound by hand 1932 Sister Mary" -- which amateur binding explains the complete absence of gilt lettering on spine or front board. A scarce piece of Chicago theatrical history. .
