Title: Aims and Methods in Classical Study
Description: Boston, Ginn & Company, 1887. Paperback. 12mo. Stiff tan wrappers. 47pp. Very good. Inoffensive small archivally-mended tear to front and rear wrapper, but tight and overall attractive. Apparent first edition of "An Address Delivered at the Meeting of the Massachusetts Classical and High School Teachers' Association, Boston, 1887" but clearly NOT published in this and the copyright page 1887 year, for Hale's title (given on front wrapper and title page) of "Professor of the Latin Language and Literature in the University of Chicago" dates it to the position he held from 1892 to 1894 (at which point he became Latin Department Chair, 1894-99, then simply professor of Latin until 1919). This classical scholar and educator (1849-1928) was famed as a Latin Grammarian and a Catullus scholar. This copy predates a Ginn & Company edition that dates title page and copyright page 1903; it is likely the true first edition, and though year of publication cannot be 1887, the fact that his University of Chicago position is noted dates it from that 1892-94 period. Scarce. .
