Handsome first edition of the volume that finally earned the poet and children's author (1905-78) the Pulitzer Prize -- and boldly inscribed and signed by her in black ink on front flyleaf: "For Judy and Walt / Quay's gift -- / the good wishes of / Phyllis McGinley / Dec. 1960." Though some criticized McGinley as a "light" poet who failed to tackle issues, Auden -- acclaimed for his "serious" verse but able to appreciate "light" verse -- provides a rousing defense of her work.
