Dark blue cloth with gilt and black spine lettering and large front board color plate. viii, 207pp, (1p ad). Color frontispiece, 7 full-page color plates. Very good. Slightest of binding edgewear, else tight and internally nice; page 67 color plate a bit rough and a few later pages crudely opened. Tight, attractive later printing of the final volume in the 4-volume "Green Forest Series." Choice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from Burgess, 1p, 8" X 10¼", Springfield, MA, 27 January 1941. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. Original folds. On imprinted letterhead, Burgess chats with an admirer. In part: "I am glad that you heard me on 'We, the People' program, despite the fact that it was not at all what I would have liked to have presented. I had nothing whatsoever to do with the preparation of the script. These programs have their own script writers, so I could merely say what was given me to say." He goes on, "It is possible that some day I may be able to get my stories regularly on the air. They have been put on many times over many stations and I have occasionally put them on myself." Boldly signed in full at the close. "We, the People" was for many years a popular weekly CBS radio show of the 1930s and '40s that featured human interest stories. .
