Author: EVERETT, Edward (1794-1865) Title: Salutation and Signature / Unsigned Portrait
Description: The other speaker at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, orating for over two hours while Lincoln orated for about two minutes -- clergyman, Massachusetts congressman (1825-35) and senator (1853-54) and governor (1836-40), ambassador to Great Britain (1841-45), Secretary of State (1852-53), educator. Bold and handsome "Yours very truly / Edward Everett / Thursday M[ornin]g" penned in brown on a pale blue 5" X 2" slip in turn tipped to a slightly larger sheet, clearly clipped from a letter (with "Dr Harris / at the Library" in his hand on verso). Fine. Accompanied by a superb 6" X 8" steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of a youngish Everett (image area 3½" X 4½") with facsimile signature beneath, undated but clearly mid-19th century. A quite attractive pair. .
