Author: ROY, John Title: Wood Engraving
Description: Iowa City, Stone Wall Press, 1963. Untitled wood engraving, 6" X 10½" (lettersheet). Near fine. Apparent proof copy of this John Roy wood engraving from Theodore Roethke's poetry collection "Sequence, Sometimes Metaphysical," published in an edition of 330 copies by the Stone Wall Press of Iowa City in 1963. This volume contained twelve engravings, each printed on fine laid paper on a folded leaf. This semi-abstract engraving (image size 4" X 6") suggest two birds in flight amidst a swirling background.. well, maybe. John Roy (1930-2001) was an artist who studied under Josef Albers at Yale University, and from 1964 to 1994 he taught at the University of Massachusetts; his illustrations appear in two other Stone Wall Press titles (Miguel Gonzalez-Gerth's "The Infinite Absence" and Thom Gunn's "A Geography: Poems") and one Windhover Press title (Alexander C. Kern's "Thoreau: Two Fragments from the Journals"). This never-bound engraving, possibly a proof copy, hails from the collection of the famed fine printer who founded Stone Wall Press in 1957, Kim Merker (1932-2013), whose 1½" X 2" custom "KM" bookplate showing a bull peering over a stone wall is affixed to the large blank margin beneath the engraving. .
