Title: St. Nicholas Has Come! He Is Coming Every Month
Description: New York, Scribner & Co, n.y. You know those annoying magazine subscription postcards that flutter out of every magazine you read onto the floor? Well, consider this item the 19th century equivalent of those. "St. Nicholas Magazine" was founded in 1873, edited by famed "Hans Brinker" children's author Mary Mapes Dodge from its inception until her death in 1903, publishing work by many notable authors and continuing until 1940. Printed advertising leaflet, 5¼" X 3½", New York, NY, undated. Near fine. All-text recto within ornamental border, titled (as noted above) in large decorative typeface and historiated initial "S." This undated piece announces "This Beautiful New Magazine.. with its Pictures, stories and Talks, Is Ready, and For sale.." -- thus clearly dating it to the magazine's debut year. Verso bears ornamental border and within an illustration of birds surrounding three seated unhappy children, crying and rubbing their eyes, with caption below reading "Children Crying for St Nicholas." Quite a charming piece and in outstanding bright condition -- a rare survivor. .
