Title: Cardenio or the Second Maiden's Tragedy
Description: [Lakewood, CO], Glenbridge Publishing Ltd, 1994. Hardcover. Introduction by Charles Hamilton. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 275pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Fine/fine. Handsome first edition, with an archival decorative-edged bookplate signed boldly by Charles Hamilton in blue fineline on front flyleaf. Hamilton, who claims he discovered the text of this long-sought work in the British Museum Library, seeks to prove the case for the authenticity of this manuscript in his text, which illustrates many handwriting samples. As hard as he tries to persuade, most in the world of Shakespearian scholarship reject his claims. (Hamilton's 1985 book "In Search of Shakespeare" explores the issue of the bard's handwriting in far greater detail.) Hamilton (1913-96) was one of the more colorful and controversial autograph dealers of the 20th century, author of many standard texts in the field. .
