Author: HUNT, Leigh Title: The Poetical Works of Leigh Hunt
Description: London, Edward Moxon, 1832. Hardcover. 8vo. Modern brown cloth tape spine and beige paper over boards. lx, 361pp, (2pp ads). Good plus. While tight and internally very good, bright and clean, the spine is a homespun modern affair and the original boards are edgeworn, spotted and age toned, with corners rounded; inner flyleaves foxed. Decent first edition of this collection of the primary works of this influential English poet, critic and essayist (1784-1859) whose circle included the Romantic poets and other major figures of his day. It was published by subscription, and supposedly many of his enemies numbered among the subscribers. Tipped-in printed slip dated 7 November 1832 notes that "The printed List of Subscribers is withheld at present, that it may be published in a more perfect state in the course of January.." Front pastedown (lavender endpapers) bears bookplate of the Phillips Library at Belmont Abbey in Hereford near the Welsh border and the miniscule oval inkstamp of the Williams Library at Cheltenham. A bit rough but despite condition rather scarce. .
