Title: Typed Letter Signed
Description: This leading scholar and academic in Latin American history managed to combine this with a distinguished reputation as both bibliophile and bibliopole; he founded the quarterly "Revista Interamericana de Bibliografía / Inter-American Review of Bibliography" in 1951 and edited the 1960 festschrift "Jose Toribio Medina: Humanist of the Americas -- An Appraisal" honoring the premiere Chilean bibliographer and polymath -- among many scholarly accomplishments. TLS, 2pp (separate leaves), 7¼" X 10½, Boston, MA, 26 February 1979. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman (1911-98). Near fine. On letterhead of "Maury A. Bromsen Associates, Inc." Bromsen writes an exceptionally meaty, in-depth missive to the noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop founder. Apparently Bromsen was researching and/or collecting the famed Civil war etchings of Adalbert J. Volck and purchased some material regarding Volck from Newman. "I tried over the weekend to reach you by telephone," he writes, "to tell you how truly delighted I am with this material." He goes on at great length describing the various printings of Volck's "Confederate War Etchings" (1880-90) and their various iterations. He hopes that "you may have good fortune in your efforts to dislodge the set of copper plates from its present owner before they go to auction. You spoke of Butterfield having located them in England. Are you certain of this? It appears that these plates were never shipped to England despite the repeated stories that they were" and theorizes there may have been two sets of plates. He begs Newman to keep him informed: "If you have any correspondence about these plates from Butterfield or any intermediary who sold them to you, this information, no matter how fragmentary, would be of tremendous value to my research on Volck.." Signed simply "Maury" in black fineline. A superb example of Bromsen's pit bull doggedness in researching his interests. Accompanied by a fine full issue of the October 1968 "American Book Collector" with front cover portrait of Bromsen holding a rare copy of an Illinois imprint he had purchased at the famed Streeter Auction (and article discusses several other of his high-end Americana acquisitions). .
