Pristine leatherbound edition of this novel awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1972 -- and with choice autograph addition, for tipped to the blank leaf facing the title page is a unique frontispiece of sorts: An Autograph Letter Signed from Farmer, 1p, 8˝" X 11", Peoria, IL, 11 May 1985. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman (1911-98, founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop). Very good. Mildly edgeworn, with original folds. Reads in part: "Enclosed is a check for $136.31 for Gen. & Family History of W. NY. I would like to know why I am being charged for the NY state tax since I don't live in NY. I've checked out the books & found nothing of what I was looking for. Took a chance & failed. if you agree I'll send the books to you so you can sell them for me. If you haven't sold them within a year, I'll donate them to the Peoria Public Library genealogical room.." Boldly penned in blue ballpoint and signed in full at the close. Farmer letters surface surprisingly seldom, and this interesting example shows that the sci-fi master (1918-2009) employed the Chicago bookseller to source out research material. Laid in is the publisher's "Collector's Notes" sheet. .
