Author: VIRGIL Title: Publii Virgilii Maronis Bucolica, Georgica Et Aeneis
Description: [Kehl, Germany], Apud Societatem Litterariam-Typographicam, 1784. Hardcover. 8vo. Full calf with gilt spine titling/decorations and raised bands. 422pp, (2pp). Marbled endpapers and page edges. Very good. Text block is tight and bright, while binding (only) is quite edgeworn, rubbed and scuffed; two miniscule Wisconsin convent names inkstamped faintly on title page. Decent early edition, with binding rough but text block superb. Entirely in Latin, this "best of" trio from the 1st century BC Roman poet includes the Bucolics (or Eclogues), the Georgics and of course the Aeneid. Front pastedown bears the 18th century armorial bookplate of Jolliffe and page 5 bears signature of "T. Jolliffe," likely Thomas Samuel Jolliffe (1746-1824), MP for Petersburg in Hampshire from 1780-87 and High Sheriff of Somerset from 1792-93; a small number of pages bear his miniscule pencil and ink margin notes. As lovely on the inside as it is rustic on the outside. .
