Title: Catéchisme de Saint Concile de Trente: Catechismus Ex Decreto Concolii Tridentini Ad Parochus
Description: Paris, Société S. Jean l'Evangéliste, 1905. Hardcover. 24mo. Full dark green calf with raised bands and gilt spine lettering, inner dentelles. xxix, 827pp, (2pp ads). All edges gilt. Frontispiece, illustration, decorative endpapers, sewn-in burgundy satin page marker. Near fine. Tight and bright first edition of this translation of the Catechism of the Council of Trent from Latin into French, a volume in the Bibliothèque de la Vraie et Solide Piété ("Library of True and Solid Piety") series. French prelate Emmanuel Marbeau (1844-1921), bishop of Meaux (1910-21), introduces his translation and presents it to Pope Pius X (1835-1914), the conservative pope known for aggressively opposing modern interpretations of Church doctrine. The Council of Trent (1545-63) was the landmark ecumenical gathering and Protestant Reformation opposition that resulted in this official Roman Catholic elaboration and clarification of many of the Church's teachings and doctrines -- and Pius X's predecessor Pope Pius IV oversaw its final sessions in 1562-63. Quite a handsome copy and surprisingly uncommon. .
