Tight and bright first edition of this translation of the Catechism of the Council of Trent from Latin into French, a volume in the Bibliothèque de la Vraie et Solide Piété ("Library of True and Solid Piety") series. French prelate Emmanuel Marbeau (1844-1921), bishop of Meaux (1910-21), introduces his translation and presents it to Pope Pius X (1835-1914), the conservative pope known for aggressively opposing modern interpretations of Church doctrine. The Council of Trent (1545-63) was the landmark ecumenical gathering and Protestant Reformation opposition that resulted in this official Roman Catholic elaboration and clarification of many of the Church's teachings and doctrines -- and Pius X's predecessor Pope Pius IV oversaw its final sessions in 1562-63. Quite a handsome copy and surprisingly uncommon. .
