Spine age toned, else tight and internally fine, with lightly age toned endpapers; slipcase rubbed and edgeworn but archivally strengthened, thus tight. Nice, tight third title in the LEC's second series -- the famed early 18th century Pope translation of the ancient Greek epic, with colophon at rear noting limitation of 1500 numbered copies (this #1252) signed by noted Haarlem designer Jan van Krimpen at the Holland firm of Joh. Enschede en Zonen. Choice autograph addition: Tipped to blank leaf facing the title page is a unique frontispiece -- a Typed Note Signed from introducer Van Doren, 1p, 6" X 7", New York, NY, 13 September 1939. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). On his personal imprinted letterhead, Van Doren thanks Gates for 54th birthday wishes, commenting, "It was nice to be remembered." Responding to some comment from his correspondent, the Illinois-born Van Doren adds: "I have naturally written, at one time or another, a good deal about Middle Western writers, but never any general treatment of the subject." Bold full signature. Van Doren (1885-1950), older brother of noted critic Mark Van Doren, was a versatile writer and won a Pulitzer prize in 1938 for his biography "Benjamin Franklin. .
