Title: The Iron Brigade: A Military History
Description: Ann Arbor, Historical Society of Michigan / Hardscrabble Books, 1983. Hardcover. Introduction by James I. Robertson Jr. Maps by Wilson K. Hoyt III. Small 4to. Brown cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, pictorial dust jacket. 412pp. Illustrations, maps, map endpapers. Fine/very good. Jacket (only) with archivally-closed (on verso) edge tears and a few edge chips. Quite tight, attractive third edition of this classic first published in 1961, with a second edition in 1975 and here with the Robertson addition. In the standard annotated bibliography "Civil War Books," Civil War historian Robertson (1930-2019) raves, "A painstakingly researched history of a fighting unit from the Old Northwest; no known facts have been omitted" -- so he was the natural candidate to provide an introduction to this third edition. This copy bears fine autograph addition: Tipped to blank leaf facing the title page is a Typed Note Signed from Robertson, 1p, 8½" X 11", Washington, DC, 30 March 1965. Addressed to noted Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On letterhead of the "United States Civil War Centennial Commission" which he served as executive director, Robertson writes Gates (secretary of the New York Civil War Round Table) to finalize his appearance at one of this group's Round Table meetings, "when you wish me to present our highest award, The Centennial Medallion, to this group." Signed simply "Bud" in black ink, the nickname he used among friends. NEVINS I, 138. .
