Tight, nice first edition of this Chinese-set novel by the obscure American diplomat Robert Spencer Ward (1906-68) who spent many years in China and wrote under the nom-de-plume Evan King and who is best known for publishing in 1945 his own unauthorized translation of Lao She's 1937 classic "Rickshaw Boy," which he also rewrote, edited and augmented! This "Presentation Copy" (as so stamped in black on front board) bears a front colophon ("This limited edition has been inscribed by the author for presentation to his friends and those of his publisher") boldly signed by King. From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81), and before him of his father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. ambassador -- likely Stevenson and Ward (King) circulated among the same diplomatic crowd. .
