Title: Memorial Addresses on the Life and Character of John Alexander Logan... Delivered in the Senate and House of Representatives, February 9 and 16, 1887...
Description: Washington, DC, Government Printing Office, 1887. Hardcover. 4to. Black cloth with ornate silver lettering, rules and decorations. 213pp. Tissue-guarded frontispiece. Very good. Minor binding edgewear. but tight and internally fine. First edition -- as discreet and inconspicuous ex-library copy as can be, almost the only marking a small blind-embossed name on title page. This copy bears nice ephemeral addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a 9" X 6" buff envelope from Logan's congressional office bearing at upper right his facsimile free-franking signature (often mistaken for original) and below it his "M.C." A quite large, dramatic hand (NOT Logan's handwriting) addresses it to "President / First National Bank / Suffield / Connecticut" in brown ink. Memorial speeches by a handful of politicos and notables. After a distinguished military career in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, John A. Logan (1826-86) went from Illinois state legislator to Congress, serving as representative and senator; he was unsuccessful vice presidential candidate in 1884 and was named 3rd Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. An interesting and unusual copy. .
