Title: My Way of Life: Pocket Edition of St. Thomas -- the Summa Simplified for Everyone
Description: Brooklyn, Confraternity of the Precious Blood, 1952. Hardcover. 24mo. Limp full green leatherette with gilt spine lettering. 630pp. All edges gilt. Two sewn-in green (one light, one dark) satin page markers. Fine. Pristine first of this edition, an abridged and simplified version of the 13th century Italian theologian's magnum, the Summa Theologica, a vast compilation of the Catholic Church's main teachings left unfinished at St. Thomas's death in 1274. This special copy bears a fine nonauthorial presentation inscription on inner flyleaf: "To Adlai Stevenson, / To whom I am sure / St Thomas is no / stranger. / Wishing you and / your loved ones / Gods Choicest / Blessings / Sincerely / Bill Carroll / 642 Beverly Blvd / Upper Darby / Ga." Carroll's identity remains vague, but clearly this was sent to the Illinois governor (1900-65) after he became the Democratic presidential candidate, a role he would reprise (same result) in 1956. .
