Tipped facing the title page is a unique frontispiece, a superb Typed Note Signed from Cheever: 1p, 7 3/4" X 6", Ossining, NY, 21 March 1979. Addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-93), noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar. Fine. Gates was long-time book reviewer for Civil War and Lincoln publications, and as member of the National Book Critics Circle had written Cheever to congratulate him. Cheever replies: "The Book Critics Circle Award was the most heartening and amiable mark of recognition that I have received and I am pleased to hear from someone who contributed to this honor.." Boldly signed in black fineline. With original envelope. Book is housed in the Franklin Library's thin card stock slipcase with gold foil label. .
