Fine. Perfect and tight limited (unspecified) first of this calfbound edition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1951 novel (first published by Knopf in 1950), third in "The Awakening Land" trilogy. This exceptional copy bears a unique frontispiece: Tipped in facing the title page is a superb content Typed Note Signed from Richter, 1p, 5½" X 8½", Pine Grove, PA, 22 May 1951. Addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-91, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Fine. Cordial note to an acquaintance who had sent congratulations on his being awarded the Pulitzer Prize for "The Town," Richter replies: "We returned home to find more mail and telegrams than I can easily answer, but I want to write and thank you for your kind letter of congratulations," adding, "It's a pleasure to hear that you now have acquired a wife, a child and a house.." Boldly signed in full. Book is housed in the Franklin Library's thin card stock slipcase with gold foil label. .
