HEGAN, Alice Caldwell - Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch

Title: Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch
Description: New York, The Century Co, 1902. Hardcover. 12mo. Olive green cloth with ivory lettering and ivory/blue/burgundy pictorial front board stamping. 153pp. Near fine. Most mild of binding wear, else tight and internally fine; tiny Christmas 1902 nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf. Quite tight and attractive early printing of this 1901 bestseller about poverty in a Louisville neighborhood, the first and by far best known novel by the Kentucky novelist (1870-1942, later known as Alice Hegan Rice). This sharp copy comes with choice additions: In 1934 a comedy/drama film version was released starring W.C. Fields, Pauline Lord and ZaSu Pitts, and in the 1970s MCA TV rereleased it in their "Comedy Classics" series -- accompanying this copy are several fine MCA TV promotional items for this rerelease. Two 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white promotional photographs showing Fields (one with Lord and Pitts, another with other cast members), an 8½" X 11" 3-page (rectos only) "Synopsis" on MCA TA letterhead, a second copy of this same "Synopsis" on non-letterhead blue stock, and an 8½" X 11" facsimile of varying size 1934 print ads for this film. In addition, tipped in facing the title page is a unique frontispiece: The bold signature on fiine heavy stock 5" X 3" card of the last surviving cast member -- EDITH FELLOWS (1923-2011, who portrayed Australia Wiggs); she signs large and bold in black ballpoint, dated by her 19 September 1982 at upper right. Laid in is the perfect bookmark: Fellows' original transmittal envelope. A lovely early copy of this book with intriguing, relevant additions. .
