Bowie took on the role of Joseph Merrick in a production of "The Elephant Man" that debuted in July 1980, then went on to Chicago's Blackstone Theatre from August 5-31, which is when this example was signed. His performance earned a thumbs up from critics. Accompanied by original transmittal envelope as well as an unsigned 1984 head-and-shoulders publicity portrait (captioned "David Bowie -- 'AVA' nomination for Best Performance by a Male" along bottom). Fine. A superb example from the height of his early fame. .
