SAINTON-DOLBY, Charlotte (1821-85) - Autograph Letter Signed

Title: Autograph Letter Signed
Description: The popular English contralto, wife of French violinist Prosper Sainton, after retiring from singing enjoyed some success as a composer with cantatas such as "The Legend of St Dorothea" (1876), "The Story of the Faithful Soul" (1879) and others. ALS, 3pp (lettersheet), 4½" X 7", London, England, 1 July 1879. Addressed to Mrs. Sawyer. Near fine. Cordial note raving about the recent visit of a mutual friend, reading in part: "Julia Welles is returning to Boston and I must send you & him to thank you for letting us possess her for even the short time she has been here. She is a very dear sweet little thing and we all love her dearly & hope to see her again before long.." In 1872 Sainton-Dolby opened a vocal academy in London where she taught singing, so it's quite possible the "dear sweet little thing" was an American pupil. A lovely example. .
