Tight and clean, with text block near fine. First American edition of this thick study and one of the last books by the prolific Scottish novelist and historical writer (1828-97). Interestingly, tipped to front flyleaf is an unidentified ca. 1900 book illustration featuring oval images of eight popular female turn-of-the-century authors, among them Oliphant. Discreet ex-library, the sole marking being call number at foot of spine. .
