(BROWN, John) - Harper's Ferry Invasion. [Spine Title]

Title: Harper's Ferry Invasion. [Spine Title]
Description: Washington, DC, U.S. Government Printing Office, 1860. Hardcover. Small 4to. Rebound in brown cloth, with original blind-embossed front/rear board cloth and spine (with gilt lettering) remounted. 71pp, 255pp, (1p). Very good. Original remounted binding a bit rubbed; text block tight and bright. Attractively rebound in matching brown with original brown cloth remounted, the first part of this Senate report of the 1st Session of the 36th Congress ("Rep. Com. No. 278") consists of "The Select Committee of the Senate appointed to inquire into the late invasion and seizure of the public property at Harper's Ferry" and is dated 14 December 1859. This copy has been extra-illustrated, for tipped in facing the first text page is an exceptional half-length steel-engraved portrait of an intense-looking Brown in full beard and three-piece suit, facsimile signature beneath; though undated, it is likely of contemporary ca. 1860 vintage. Following this 71pp report is the 256pp "Testimony Taken before the Select Committee, appointed by the United States Senate, to inquire into the facts and circumstances connected with the invasion and seizure of the Harper's Ferry Armory in October, 1859" and is dated 5 January 1860. Fascinating transcript of this Senate Committee's questioning of 32 figures (which include John A. Andrew, Joshua R. Giddings, William H. Seward and Henry Wilson). A sharp copy with fine contemporary John Brown image. .
